India gears up for high-altitude trials of indigenous Light Battle Tank in 2025

India is advancing its defence capabilities with the development of a new Light Battle Tank (LBT) designed for high-altitude warfare. The indigenously built tank is set to undergo extensive Army trials in 2025, marking a major step in modernising the nation’s armoured fleet, particularly for regions like Ladakh.
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with engineering firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the tank supports the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, strengthening domestic production and reducing reliance on imports.
The LBT is specifically crafted for operations in altitudes over 4,000 meters, featuring a lightweight design that combines agility, firepower, and endurance. Unlike traditional heavy tanks, it is optimised for harsh terrain and challenging combat conditions, ensuring better performance in mountainous regions.
Speaking at the Indian Armour Symposium, Lt. Gen. Vivek Kashyap, Director General of the Armoured Corps, highlighted the Army’s plans to develop future light battle tanks tailored to evolving operational needs. These tanks will prioritise mobility, firepower, survivability, and cost-efficiency.
Lt General Kashyap also highlighted the importance of collaboration between DRDO, L&T, and private industry partners to create adaptable and innovative tank platforms for diverse battlefield conditions.
The trials and future development plans underline India’s focus on self-reliance and advanced defence technology to meet the demands of modern warfare.
